San Francisco is in the middle of a property crime crisis. Car break-in reports have tripled from 10,000 in 2010 to 30,000 in 2017. I hear from my constituents every day about the need to address this issue and the need for better public safety.
My office has been working hard to get the word out about two public safety initiatives I know will make a difference – Park Smart and the Security Camera Registry. These initiatives are just the beginning to tackling this crisis head on. In the coming weeks my office will be holding a hearing on the effectiveness of the SFPD District Station Property Crime Unit and I will continue to be part of the police staffing analysis that is underway under Mayor Farrell's leadership. We need to add hundreds of additional officers to our police department and I will support this effort on the Budget & Finance Committee and additional means necessary.
We need to stop crime before it starts. Improving public safety and reducing car break-ins will take a multi-pronged approach, and we have to use all of the tools available to us. We must educate ourselves, families and neighbors to not leave any valuables in your car. SFPD has trademarked the Park Smart! public education campaign to take all of your valuables with you.
Along with Captains from all three District 2 police stations, District Attorney’s Office, Community Engagement Division Commander David Lazar and our neighborhood association partners, my office is hosting a series of Pubic Safety Forums across District 2 to help spread the word about these two important public safety initiatives. We will have presentations from SFPD, the District Attorney’s office and Q&A.
